What's the difference between lossless and lossy here?
Lossless keeps every pixel exactly the same and gives a moderate size cut. Lossy reduces the colors used, which shrinks the file a lot more with a small, usually unnoticeable change.
Does compression keep transparency?
Yes. The transparent (alpha) areas of your PNG are preserved either way.
